China has the largest consumer group in the world. At present, Chinese people’s consumption concept of home textile products is also gradually changing. With the gradual improvement of Chinese enterprises’ design and technology level, the huge consumption potential of home textile market will be released. As one of the three final product areas of the textile industry, home textiles has made a rapid development since 2000, with an average annual growth rate of more than 20%. In 2002, the output value of China’s home textiles industry was about 300 billion yuan, rising to 363 billion yuan in 2003, and 435.6 billion yuan in 2004. Statistics released by the China Home Textile Industry Association show that the output value of China’s home textile industry was about 654 billion yuan in 2006, an increase of 20 percent compared with 2005.
In 2005, the output value of China’s home textile industry reached 545 billion yuan, an increase of 21% compared with that of 2004. From the perspective of resource consumption, the output value of home textile industry only accounts for 23% of the total output value of the national textile industry, but the fiber consumption of the national home textile industry accounts for 1/3 of the entire textile industry and more than 1/9 of the world’s fiber consumption. In 2005, the output value of household textiles in each famous home textile town exceeded 10 billion yuan, and Haining in Zhejiang Province was more than 15 billion yuan. Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the five provinces and cities where the home textile industry cluster is located, are the top five in the export of home textile products. The export volume of the five provinces and cities accounts for 80.04% of the total export volume of the country’s home textile products. The home textile industry in Zhejiang has developed particularly rapidly, with the total export volume of home textile products reaching 3.809 billion US dollars. It accounted for 26.86% of the total exports of home textiles in China.
From January to August 2008, the export of home textile products was 14.57 billion US dollars, with a year-on-year growth of 19.66%. Imports reached $762 million, up 5.31 percent year on year. From January to August 2008, the characteristic of the export of home textile products was that the growth of value volume was significantly higher than that of quantity. The export amount of products whose value growth was higher than that of quantity growth was 13.105 billion US dollars, accounting for 90% of the total export amount.
According to the survey of China Home Textile Industry Association, China’s home textile market still has huge room for development. According to the calculation of textile consumption in developed countries, clothing, home textiles and industrial textiles account for 1/3 each, while the proportion in China is 65:23:12. However, according to the standards of most developed countries, the consumption of clothing and household textiles should be basically equal, and as long as the per capita consumption of household textiles increases by one percentage point, China’s annual demand can increase by more than 30 billion yuan. With the improvement of people’s material living standard, the modern home textile industry will have more growth.
China has a home textile market of 600 billion yuan, but there are no real leading brands. Luolai, known as the first in the market, only has a sales volume of 1 billion yuan. Similarly, this over-fragmentation of the market is even more pronounced in the pillow market. As a result of the promising market prospects, enterprises flocked to the brand, China’s home textile industry enterprises currently average only 6% profit.
