Mayor de Blasio showed off the city’s new beach towels and announced that the public beach will be open on Memorial Day weekend, just like the days before the pandemic. Mayor’s Studio
After the pandemic has delayed the beach opening for a year, lifeguards will rush back to the New York City waterfront during the Memorial Day weekend, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday.
de Blasio said public beaches including Rockaway will open on May 29. After the last day of school on June 26, four dozen city swimming pools will be open.
“Last year, we had to postpone the opening of public beaches and we had to limit the number of outdoor public swimming pools. This year, what we have to do is open to families and children in this city,” he said.
“Outdoors. This is exactly what we want people to be. For families in New York City, this is a great way to spend the summer vacation.”
De Blasio launched a new beach towel with the theme of social distancing at the press conference. The towel is affixed with the ubiquitous “Keep This Far Apart” sign posted by the park department throughout the city.
“In this summer, New York City will be rejuvenated,” he said as he opened the towel. “This is vital to the recovery of all of us. We will spend a safe summer and a fun summer. This reminds you that you can do both at the same time.”
After the beach opens, lifeguards will be on duty from 10 am to 6 pm every day, and swimming is prohibited at other times.
